Nestled between Yamhill and Morrison in the heart of downtown Portland, a stretch of seven city blocks - including the famous Pioneer Courthouse Square - make up this bustling district.

Pioneer District is a Main Grid Room.

Description

The heart of Portland's downtown core, this area encompasses City Hall and other munipal buildings, but gets its name for Pioneer Courthouse Square. Affectionately known as the city's 'living room', the square is a thriving urban park. The most-visited site in Oregon, tourists are everywhere during all seasons, and it's a hub for all downtown activity. The Square's features include the Waterfall Fountain, built of granite; sixteen columns with classical pillars topped with carved yellow roses on which crawl pink-and-green spotted bugs; and two brick amphitheaters which provide seats for events.

The bricks of the square are embossed with the names of people who have died from HIV/AIDS as a memorial. During the day, vendors are out in food stands, and it's a popular place for protests, farmer's markets, and festivals. At night, it's not unusual to see goth kids hanging out, couples enjoying a romantic stroll, or a band playing.
