St. Johns is at the northwest end of the beautiful St. Johns Bridge. The main drag through St. Johns is N. Lombard St., which is a busy, sometimes trashy road between St. Johns and the I-5 freeway.

St. Johns is a Main Grid Room.

Description

The most northwestern part of Portland--bordered by the Columbia River to the northeast, the Willamette River to the northwest, and the North Portland Railroad to the southeast--St. Johns has seen better days. It is one of the poorest parts of Portland despite a recent surge in new development and efforts towards gentrification. Its transient population is on the rise due to the sudden decrease in affordable housing and a crackdown on loitering in Vancouver, WA to the north.

Crime is now what St. Johns is best known for, but the diversity it used to be known for can be easily seen in its gangs. Asians, Blacks, Hispanics, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, and Whites are all represented by ethnocentric gangs, but there is an abnormally high ratio of gangs with mixed ethnic backgrounds in the neighborhood.

Residences

The Cloisters

The historic building of The Cloisters is one of red brick and black iron fire-escapes instead of balconies. It's a little grimy on the outside, with a bit of 503 Heavy gang graffiti sprayed onto the brick in the alleyway beside the building.
